Popplet for my initial ideas

When we was told we was going to do video installation work I decided to create a popplet based on ideas I have based on this. The main theme of this was encounters and I came up with a wide verity of ideas exploring the possibilities of the technology available for me. There were many artists influences such as Sam Tylor Wood where I wanted to incorporate slowmotion within my idea and this lead onto ideas based on a fight scene. I was also influenced by an exhibition at the named "Ambika p3" at the university of Westminster created by David Hall called "Progressive Recession" where Closed Circuit Telle vision was incorporated and turned into part of this exhibition; it was surreal having that experience and I decided that I would like to incorporate those aspects into my final exhibition. Also artists like Bruce Nauman was very influential infect I decided to incorporate his idea of walking towards a screen within my exhibition but with a twist where those participating feel as if they are getting rushed and by doing this incorporate the theme of encounters within my exhibition

Location Recce
For my Video installation I wanted the area for exhibition to be the same area I filmed in. I needed to find a corridor that is quite narrow and these were the area's I had available. I had to keep in mind that I needed to find a corridor that was very tight and narrow to make the audience feel uncertain and not sure about their surroundings. This will work to our advantage because the narrative of the video is meant to frighten and scare the audience into believing the prerecorded footage on screen is real and those running on the screen are running behind them

Test Footage
After deciding what location to use for our exhibition we needed to film some footage and see how the idea could plan out.
iPhone Footage
We 1st used an iPhone to film some action similar to the on screen action we will have at the exhibition. Im glad we took time out to film this because it ensured that we experimented with equipment available to us to discover possible problems or issues

This test footage was great, it showed that the initial idea may work just the equipment we used was the only flaw. From the footage we instantly knew that the shakiness effected the final outcome of the footage. To amend this we decided to hire a SLR camera with a tripod
SLR 550D Footage
After the original test footage we deiced that the main concern was the shakiness of the video and how this effected the overall look so with the SLR we placed it on a tripod and placed that on a chair to give it the top down view we wanted to achieve

The footage we gathered from this test was near perfect, we resolved the problem with the shakiness and the overall quality of the footage was far better compared to the iPhone footage. We decided that any footage captured must be used with a SLR; anything below this will be noticed instantly and a flaw in the quality could jeopardise how effective our exhibition could be
Set up for the video installationBefore we did set up our final video installation we insured we created a plan for all involved to know what the final set up should look like.
TV's: There will be two tv's in this video installation; one being live feed and the other pre recorded footage. There will be a camera behind the TV's positioned to capture the participants walking towards the tv's and this will be used for the live feed footage. Speakers: Our initial plan was to have speakers positioned behind the screens and play sound captured from the pre recorded footage to add another effect to convince the participants its realistic Positions: The TV's will be positioned infront of a door at the far end of the corridor and behind that door will be me and my team mate. From this position we will be controlling the footage seen on the screen. |

These are the results of our final footage. We decided to mix it up and have two individuals running away from the camera and another video of another individual walking away from the camera. Overall there is major improvements in these videos compared to the other tests. For example the quality of the footage is far better compared to anything we recorded before and the steadiness of these shots are far better compared to the other footage

From here we are deciding either to have one clip and just play that at the correct time or merge both clips and keep it looping
The technology we used for our exhibition was digital. We used a combination of TV monitors with both pre recorded and edited footage and live TV broadcast. For the live stream it wasn’t edited in anyway just a live stream in real time furthermore there was no sound track but for the pre recorded footage we had a sound track synced. We decided to have sound for the pre recorded and not the live feed because the audience would already be able to hear their surroundings but the pre recorded footage used sound because the audience would be viewing footage that they aren’t present within and also the sound with the pre recorded footage worked with the narrative of the exhibition, we wanted the audience to believe that the people running within the pre recorded footage is behind them so the sound would convince them that the individuals running in the footage are behind the audience viewing the exhibition.
For the exhibition we wanted the audience to be aware of their surroundings and feel uneasy about it so we decided to use a tight corridor to be the place of our exhibition. This tight area is very narrow and there are no other routes or ways to exit the corridor but the way they entered but the footage makes the audience believe that the individuals running in the pre recorded are running behind them and they are forced to believe there are no exits.
